Atlas Blogged

Today, I am setting out upon a mighty quest.

One that few have dared set out upon. One that fewer still have completed.

Attempted by both great and lesser men, it has raised lesser men to greatness simply by it’s completion.  (And by that I mean anyone who’s done it’s a better man than me sister….)

I have attempted it before myself.  And each time I have failed.

But this time I am determined.

This time I will begin at the beginning and not stop until my trek is complete, until my journey is at its finish.

This time, I’m going to finish Atlas Shrugged.

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve started that damned book.  I have book marks and dog ears almost all the way to half through.  But no further.

This time it’s going to be different.

I think the book appeals to a certain type of individual.  First, it must be the type who isn’t intimidated by 1200 pages of small type.  Ayn Rand has a bit of a rep so most people, I think understand where she’s coming from.

Those who agree will be likely to dive in. Those who like to read and are curious, would probably follow.  Liberal and “progressive” types may join in, depending on what kind of counter arguments the book might spur.

It’s not a political book.  It’s not an economic book.  It’s a philosophical book.  A philosophy I think you either share or do not.  It’s not one you can come down in the middle of.  Or at least I don’t think so…

Anyway, 1200 pages is a bunch and I have about 4 other reading projects I’m trying to get through as well.  So what to do?

In response to the question “how does one eat an elephant?” a wise and pithy man once said “one bite at a time.”  So that’s how I’m going to tackle this elephant of an epic.  I’m going to read 10 pages a day.  And then write about it here.  Not a Herculean task.   Not chapter by chapter.  Just 10 pages.  That way I should be able to finish in 4 months.  Just in time for the holidays.

Anyway, this is a new thing here so I’m leaving the comments open.  Hopefully someone may actually read this and I’ll get some interaction.

So off I go…

  1. Hey, that is a mighty task you have set yourself. Russ, I’m sure, will be glad to add his comments given that he finally finished the book himself!
